ReelMusic vs Epidemic Sound for Reels and Shorts

A track composed from your footage against a subscription to a stock library you search by hand. Licence terms side by side, what happens to your videos after you cancel, the workflow from clip to post, and what each costs per video at 4, 12 and 30 videos a month.

Disclosure: ReelMusic is our own product, so read this as a comparison written by one of the two sides. Every claim about Epidemic Sound is drawn from its public pages and help centre, linked in the sources, and the section "Where Epidemic Sound is the better choice" is not decorative.
Two ways to the same Reel: search a catalogue and trim, or hand the clip to the app and position what comes back.

THE SHORT VERSION

Epidemic Sound is a subscription to a large catalogue of music and sound effects produced for its own library, plus tools for voice-over and track adaptation, used from a browser or a desktop editor. A business account needs the Pro plan ($16.99 a month on annual billing, $39.99 month to month) or above; videos published while subscribed stay cleared, new videos after cancelling are claimed. ReelMusic is an iPhone app that analyses a clip and composes an original track for it; paid-plan tracks are cleared for commercial use on any platform and the licence survives cancellation. If you post many videos across long and short formats, want vocals, sound effects or a huge choice, and work on a desktop, Epidemic Sound is the stronger tool. If you post Reels, TikToks and Shorts from a business account on an iPhone and want music that fits the clip without searching, ReelMusic is built for exactly that.

What each product actually is

Epidemic Sound

A Stockholm-based music library that commissions tracks from its own artists and licenses them by subscription. You search by mood, genre, tempo or instrument, audition, download, and edit the track into your video elsewhere. Plans are tiered by use: Creator for personal channels, Pro for client work and ads, Business for company marketing with two seats, Enterprise on contract. All individual plans include monthly credits for voice-over and track adaptation tools. Videos are protected from Content ID claims by safelisting your channels.

ReelMusic

An iPhone app for business and creator accounts. You pick a clip from Photos; the app reads its mood, pace and cuts and composes an original instrumental track to fit, usually in about a minute. You steer with one tap (Suggested, Cinematic, Epic, Calm, Electronic), position the track against the cuts, set fades, balance it with the original sound, and export a finished video to Photos. Paid-plan tracks carry a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive commercial licence. There is no catalogue, no vocals and no desktop version.

The row that matters most for a business account is the last-but-two. Both products keep already-published videos safe when you stop paying. The difference is the day after: with Epidemic Sound, the next video you publish with one of its tracks is claimed; with ReelMusic, every track you generated while paying stays yours to use, and only generating new ones needs a plan.

Workflow: search and audition a catalogue vs. upload a clip and get a track back

Epidemic Sound, from clip to post

  1. Open the site, filter by mood, genre, tempo, length.
  2. Audition candidates; download the one you like, in the format your editor wants.
  3. Import the clip and the track into an editor (CapCut, Premiere, iMovie).
  4. Trim the track to the clip, find a section that ends cleanly, add fades.
  5. Export, transfer to the phone if you edited on a desktop, post.

ReelMusic, from clip to post

  1. Pick the clip from Photos; analysis runs on its own.
  2. Keep Suggested or tap a vibe, tap Generate. About a minute.
  3. Drag the track to the cuts, set fades, balance the mix.
  4. Export to Photos, post from the phone.

Where Epidemic Sound is faster: when you already know the track, or you edit a batch of videos on a desktop and want the same brand sound across all of them. Where ReelMusic is faster: from a fresh clip on the phone, because the search and the trim-to-fit steps do not exist. Two honest caveats about ReelMusic's side. The tracks are AI-composed instrumentals; Epidemic Sound's are human-produced arrangements with vocals available and stems on higher plans. And "fits the clip" means length, pace and mood; it does not mean every drum hit lands on every cut, which is why the positioning step exists.

The step that disappears is "make a pre-made track fit". Everything else is similar.

Cost at 4, 12 and 30 videos a month

Both products are flat monthly subscriptions, so the price per video falls the more you post. The chart uses the plan a business account actually needs on each side, at month-to-month list prices: Epidemic Sound Pro at $39.99, and ReelMusic Monthly at $14.99 as listed on the App Store. Annual billing changes both numbers and is in the table under the chart.

Three things the chart does not show. ReelMusic plans include a monthly allowance of tracks, shown in the app, and extra tracks can be bought as credit packs, so at very high volumes the per-video figure rises; Epidemic Sound downloads are unlimited. Epidemic Sound's price also buys sound effects, voice-over credits and a catalogue you can browse for long-form work, none of which ReelMusic offers. And the cheapest line on each side is the annual plan, which on Epidemic Sound's side means committing for a year to a licence that stops covering new videos the day it ends.

Where Epidemic Sound is the better choice

Choose Epidemic Sound if you

  • Post long-form YouTube videos or podcasts as well as Shorts. A catalogue with full-length tracks, stems and sound effects covers all of them.
  • Want vocals, lyrics or a specific human-produced sound.
  • Edit on a desktop, on Android, or in a team. ReelMusic is iPhone-only with no shared workspace.
  • Publish more videos a month than a ReelMusic allowance covers.
  • Need the same recognisable track across a campaign; a catalogue track can be reused, a generated track is composed per clip.
  • Need broadcast or TV coverage, which Epidemic Sound sells on its higher plans and ReelMusic excludes.

Choose ReelMusic if you

  • Post Reels, TikToks and Shorts from a business account and the music's main job is to fit and to be safe.
  • Shoot and post from an iPhone and do not want a desktop step.
  • Do not want to search: the clip is the brief.
  • Want the licence to outlive the subscription for every track you made.
  • Export the same video to several platforms and want one licence that travels with the file.
  • Prefer music that is not in thousands of other businesses' videos.
